Its name means "River View" in Spanish. It is one of the oldest communities in Fort Lauderdale and features tree-lined streets, sidewalks and unique architecture. An era of prosperity and new transportation in the 1920s allowed Fort Lauderdale to begin the migration from an agricultural community to a resort town. Residential areas, such as Rio Vista began to develop. By February 1923, Rio Vista was booming. World War II brought thousands of servicemen to the area who later settled here. Rio Vista's development boom began again, and today, the area reflects the history. The community is bounded by Federal Highway (U.S. 1) on the west, bordered on the east by the Intracoastal Waterway, south of the New River and north of SE 12th Street (north of the neighborhoods of Harbordale and Lauderdale Harbours.

On the north side of the New River is Fort Lauderdale's famous Las Olas Boulevard with its upscale dining, shopping and entertainment along the Boulevard. In addition are: The Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Business District, city and county government offices, as well as several city parks along the Riverwalk. The Broward Center for the Performing Arts is a cornerstone to the Himmarshee Arts and Entertainment District which is a quick trip a couple of blocks to the west. Several events are staged in the parks along the Riverwalk’s several parks throughout the year.
